Tell me about your The Beginning!

We first met each other online on Australia Day weekend in 2019. Eric was holidaying with his friends up in Rutherglen when we connected via one of the apps. After some back and forth, it wasn’t long before we arranged to meet in person on February 2nd. Our first face-to-face was at a small bar in Melbourne’s west called Penny Young. We decided to meet during the late morning, so if things went well it could lead into lunch. Eric arrived earlier than Ryan and was so nervous he changed his seating location 3 times before Ryan walked in. It was a stinking hot day, and we were seated in the alfresco and we were both sweating profusely. Despite that, we enjoyed each other’s company, talking about our lives and learning about one another with a conversation that was easy, relaxing, and kept us both engaged. Given that Eric had just finished his run of night shifts that morning, we moved to a different spot to have lunch. Not long after, Ryan had invited Eric back to his place to play Super Mario Party. We spent the next few hours with each other and having fun, however it came to an end when Eric needed to head back home to get some much needed sleep. Eric gestured to shake Ryan’s hand to say goodbye shortly before Ryan pulled him in for a long kiss. On Eric’s way out he gave Ryan the “finger guns”… which has now become a running joke between them both.

When and where did you get engaged?

Eric decided to take the opportunity to propose to Ryan whilst they were in Europe last September for Lisa’s (Ryan’s sister) 40th birthday. Eric decided that he would propose to Ryan in a small coastal town called Positano, situated along the Amalfi coast of Italy. After spending months preparing a ring, coordinating a proposal with the boating company, and carrying around this ring in his backpack for weeks as they moved through Europe, Eric popped the question during sunset on the front of a boat off shore of Positano. After struggling to ask Ryan to marry him because he was a sobbing mess, Ryan said “yes”. Eric never had any nerves about proposing, especially on the day. He knew it was the right thing to do, and it was important to enjoy the day and remember it for all that it was.

What style/theme have you chosen for your Wedding Day?

We seem to have cultivated a floral theme given that we’ll have flowers at the ceremony being thrown, invitations were floral design, and the cake is also floral – I think that’s a theme? But it’s not like we have an obvious Team Avengers theme or anything. However, given we’d purchased our ‘forever’ home not long ago, we did want to make sure that everything (where possible) was local. Everything from our suits, to the cake, to the ceremony and reception venues, were organised within 5min from our home.

What are you most looking forward to on the day?

Photos with the dogs!! I’ll be keen to discuss with you some ideas I have about this. Please be warned that you may fall in love with Henry and George. Spending time with our family and friends in relaxed environment on the deck with the sunset in the background during daylight savings. Having a dance hopefully, though I need to confirm that we have the room for a dance floor.

Top Tips!

Don’t let tradition define what your wedding should or shouldn’t look like. Let the day reflect what you as a couple, what you want it to be, and what you can afford.
